How to Identify Authentic Rudraksha: A Practical Guide

An authentic Rudraksha is the dried seed of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree, and nothing else. It is not carved, glued, dyed, filled or "improved". The trouble is that a good fake can look convincing in a product photo, and most of the home tests people pass around online cannot tell the difference.

This guide walks through what a genuine bead actually looks like, the common ways beads are faked, which popular tests work and which don't, what a proper lab check involves, and the questions worth asking any seller before you pay.

What makes a Rudraksha authentic

Three things define a genuine bead, and every check below comes back to one of them.

Natural mukhi lines. The "mukhi" (face) count is the number of grooves that run from the top of the bead to the bottom. On a real bead these grooves are formed by the seed as it grows. They are continuous, slightly irregular, and go all the way around.

Internal seed chambers. Inside the bead, each mukhi corresponds to a compartment that held a seed. A genuine 5 Mukhi has five chambers; a genuine 7 Mukhi has seven. This internal structure cannot be faked, which is why it is the basis of laboratory testing.

Woody, cellular surface. The outer shell is dense, fibrous wood with a naturally bumpy, thorny texture. It is not smooth, not glossy on its own, and not uniform.

Beads come from Nepal, Indonesia (often called Java beads) and parts of India. Nepal beads are typically larger with deeper, more pronounced grooves; Indonesian beads are smaller and smoother. Both are real Rudraksha. Origin affects size, look and price, not authenticity.

How Rudraksha beads are faked

Knowing the tricks makes the fakes easier to spot.

  • Carved fakes. Beads carved from areca (betel) nut, wood or other seeds to imitate the shape and lines. These are the most common fakes for rare mukhis.
  • Line-added beads. A genuine low-mukhi bead (say a 5 Mukhi) with extra grooves cut in to sell it as a 7, 8 or higher. The bead is real; the mukhi count is not.
  • Joined beads. Two beads glued together and finished to pass as a Gauri Shankar (naturally joined pair) or a Trijuti (three joined). The join is filled and polished over.
  • Filled and re-shaped beads. Cracks, holes and damage filled with resin or wood paste, then dyed to match.
  • Painted and dyed beads. Cheap or damaged beads darkened with dye to look like premium aged beads.
  • Moulded fakes. Plastic, resin or wood-powder composite cast from a mould. These look too perfect and repeat the same pattern bead to bead.

The rarer the mukhi, the higher the chance of a fake. 1 Mukhi, 14 Mukhi and above, Gauri Shankar and Trijuti are faked far more often than 5 Mukhi.

Home checks that actually help

None of these give a guarantee, but together they catch most obvious fakes.

1. Look at the mukhi lines under magnification

Use a 10x jeweller's loupe or your phone camera zoomed in. Genuine grooves are natural channels with soft, uneven edges and the same woody texture inside the groove as on the surface. Carved lines have sharp, clean, uniform edges, often with a different colour or texture at the base of the cut. Follow each line from top to bottom: a real mukhi runs the full length without breaking or fading out.

2. Count the lines at both ends

Count the grooves where they meet at the top of the bead, then at the bottom. On a genuine bead the counts match. On a line-added bead an extra groove often starts strong and disappears before reaching the other end.

3. Check the surface texture

A real bead has a cellular, pitted, slightly thorny surface all over. Look for patches that are smoother or flatter than the rest, or a faint seam running around the bead. Both suggest filling, joining or re-shaping.

4. Look for glue lines and filler

On joined beads, check the "waist" where the two beads meet. A natural Gauri Shankar shows continuous surface texture across the join. A glued pair has a filled, smoother band, sometimes with a slightly different colour. A pin or toothpick run gently along the join will catch on filler where it would glide on natural wood.

5. Warm water for dye

Soak the bead in warm (not boiling) water for a few hours. Dyed beads leak colour into the water. Genuine beads may darken slightly with moisture but do not stain the water. This is one of the few traditional tests with a clear basis.

6. Compare across beads

If you are buying several, put them side by side. Natural beads are all a little different. Moulded fakes repeat the same bumps and lines in exactly the same places.

Popular tests that don't work

These get repeated everywhere, and they are not reliable.

The water (sink) test. The claim is that a real bead sinks and a fake floats. Wood, areca nut and dense resin fakes all sink. Meanwhile a genuine but unripe, hollow or very dry bead can float. Sinking tells you almost nothing.

The copper coin test. Placing the bead between two coins and watching it rotate has no physical basis. It does not identify anything.

The milk test. The idea that milk will not spoil with a Rudraksha in it is a folk belief, not a test.

The "energy" or feel test. Whatever you believe about the bead's effect on the wearer, it is not a way to detect carving, glue or dye.

"Lab certified" with no image. A certificate is only as good as the evidence behind it. A generic certificate that does not show your bead's X-ray and photo does not prove anything about the bead in your hand.

How laboratory testing works

Home checks catch crude fakes. A well-made carved or joined bead needs instruments. Three tests, used together, settle the question.

X-ray imaging

An X-ray shows the seed chambers inside the bead. The number of chambers must match the number of mukhi lines on the outside. A 5 Mukhi with extra carved lines still has five chambers. A moulded fake has no chambers at all. A glued pair shows two separate internal structures with a foreign material in between. This is the single most decisive test.

Microscopic examination

Density check

Genuine Rudraksha has a fairly consistent density. Areca nut, resin composites and hollowed or filled beads fall outside the expected range. Measuring the bead's volume and weight gives a density figure that is compared against the band established for genuine beads of that size class. (We publish the result as verified or not verified rather than raw numbers, so counterfeiters do not get a target to aim at.)

Any one of these tests can be argued with. All three agreeing is very hard to fake.

What to ask before you buy

Whether you buy from us or anyone else, these five questions filter out most bad sellers.

  1. Can I see the X-ray of this specific bead after purchasing the bead? Not a sample image, not a generic certificate. The one for the bead you are paying for.
  2. Does the certificate include a photo of the bead? You should be able to match the photo, the X-ray and the bead in your hand.
  3. Where is the bead from? A seller who knows their sourcing will tell you Nepal, Indonesia or India without hesitation, and the size and groove depth should match that answer.
  4. Has the bead been treated? Oiling and a protective finish are normal. Dye, filler and reshaping are not. A good seller will say plainly what has been done.

If a seller cannot answer the first question, treat everything else as unverified.

FAQ

How can I tell if a Rudraksha is real at home?

Look at the mukhi lines under 10x magnification. Real grooves have soft, natural edges and the same woody texture inside as on the surface; carved lines have sharp, uniform edges. Count the lines at both ends of the bead (they should match), check for a seam or smooth filled patches, and soak the bead in warm water to test for dye. These catch most crude fakes but not well-made ones.

Does a real Rudraksha sink in water?
