This is the part people actually search for, so let's go through every method you'll come across, including the ones with fancy names.

The Copper Coin Rotation Test

The claim: place the bead between two copper coins, and a genuine one supposedly rotates or shows some "energy" reaction. It doesn't work. There's no physical mechanism by which a Rudraksha bead interacts with copper coins in a way that reveals authenticity. This test tells you nothing about carving, filling, or internal structure. Skip it.

The Boiling Water Test

A variant of the old float test, sometimes done with hot water instead of cold. The idea is that a fake will discolor or crack. In practice: boiling water can damage a genuine bead too, by drying it out and cracking its natural surface, and a well-made fake made of dense resin or wood may survive it just fine. This test can actively harm a real bead while proving nothing. Don't do it to a bead you care about.

The CT Scan Internal Chamber Test

This one's directionally correct but usually overkill. A CT scan does show internal structure, in principle the same category of test as an X-ray: does the inside match the outside. But CT scanning is built for large, dense objects (or medical imaging), it's expensive per item, slow, and most gem and Rudraksha labs don't use it because X-ray achieves the same result, chamber count and shape, at a fraction of the cost and time. If someone's advertising a "CT scan certificate" for a Rudraksha bead, ask what it actually shows that a well-taken X-ray doesn't. Usually, nothing extra.

The Natural Mukhi Line Count Test

This is the real, useful test, it's just often given a fancier name than it deserves. Under a 10x loupe, look at each groove: does it run continuously from top to bottom, are the edges soft and natural rather than sharp-cut, does the texture inside the groove match the surface outside it. Count the lines at the top of the bead, then at the bottom. For a genuine 7 Mukhi, you should get seven both times. What actually settles it: X-ray plus specific gravity

Magnification catches obvious carving. It won't catch a well-made fake, or a lower-mukhi bead with an eighth line quietly added. For that you need to see inside the bead. An X-ray of a genuine 7 Mukhi shows seven internal chambers lined up with the seven external grooves, full stop, no interpretation needed. Specific gravity, calculated from the bead's measured dimensions and weight, catches the other failure mode: a bead that's been hollowed, filled, or partly replaced with non-Rudraksha material, something that can slip past both a visual check and an X-ray if you're not also checking density.

Nepal vs Indonesian 7 Mukhi Rudraksha

Both genuine. Nepal beads run larger, 18–24 mm typically, with deeper grooves. Indonesian (Java) 7 Mukhi tends to sit smaller, 10–16 mm, with a smoother surface. Price should track that difference; a "Nepal" 7 Mukhi priced like an Indonesian one is a red flag before you've even checked anything else.
